HSE Cooperation with FIFA/CIES Expands Geography
On September 22nd, 2017, graduates of the HSE/FIFA/CIES programme in sports management received their degrees. This was the third year of graduates from the programme. Thirty students of the programme studied six modules: sports management, law, marketing and sponsorship, financial management, management of sports venues and competitions, and communications. Over 70 people spoke during the courses, including Andreas Herren, former Director of Communications at FIFA, Jean-Luc Gripond, President of SportVision, a French consulting agency, Pavel Kidisyuk, Vice President of Avangard hockey club, and Mikhail Demin, CEO at NTV Plus.
A key part of learning at the programme is creating and defending team projects. In 2017, three projects were singled out for special praise: projects on sports tourism development, football for the deaf, and implementation of virtual reality technologies for Russia's hockey market.
This year, the graduates included Roman Shirokov, a former player in the Russian national football team. After completing his sports career, he now heads the Russian Trade Union of Football Players, is a member of the Russian Football Union Dispute Resolution Chamber, and is adviser to the Minister of Sport for the Moscow Region.
'I was attracted by the HSE and FIFA sports management programme', said Roman Shirokov, 'I wanted my studies to rely on the most recent international practices, and to involve leading Russian experts. I got all that at HSE'.
Roman Shirokov will promote the programme in his new position as a 'sport leader'. His responsibilities will include communicating with the professional sports community, since one of the programme's important social tasks is adaptation and retraining for athletes who have completed their professional careers.
FIFA/CIES comes to HSE in St. Petersburg
Pierre Cornu, the new CIES president, former General Prosecutor, and currently Judge at the Appellate Court of the Canton of Neuchâtel, took part in the Russian programme's graduation ceremony for the first time. Before the ceremony, he delivered an open lecture to HSE students, in which he spoke about the new challenges faced by sports organizations, emphasizing the problems of doping, match fixing, and management transparency.
The FIFA/CIES partner network includes 16 universities in various countries. Pierre Cornu believes that the Russian programme 'is developing very dynamically'. He said that it is 'largely thanks to the people who manage and teach at the programme, and we hope that our cooperation with HSE will last for many years'.
The new academic year will offer even more opportunities for sports managers' education in Russia. According to Dmitry Kuznetsov, head of the project and tenured professor at HSE, the joint programme with FIFA/CIES will now be available at two HSE campuses, in Moscow and St. Petersburg.
