Green HSE Wins 2020 Moscow Volunteer Competition
The team of Green HSE, an ecological student association, took first place in the category ‘Kind Team. University’, where the largest number of participants (2,025 contestants) took part. Eight volunteer teams from Moscow universities made it to the final round of the competition.
MIEM Research Professor Viktor Maslov Receives ‘Global Energy’ Prize
The Global Energy Association awards outstanding Russian scholars for their contributions to the development of the national power engineering industry on their professional holiday – national Power Engineers’ Day. Professor Viktor Maslov, a RAS member, Doctor of Sciences (Physics and Math), and MIEM Research Professor, has become the first winner of the Honorary Diploma from the Association ‘for his fundamental contributions to upholding nuclear power safety’.

Fungus and Architecture: HSE Alumna Receives a Patent for Her Invention
During her time at HSE University, alumna Anna Budnikova (MA, Prototyping Future Cities, 2019) developed an innovative project called Mycokarst under the supervision of leading Shukhov Lab expert Elena Mitrofanova. The project’s technology involves using fungal spores to repair karst sinkholes in urban environments. Now Budnikova’s innovation is patented.
Students of HSE University in St. Petersburg Win First Round of ICPC Semifinals
Students of the St. Petersburg School of Physics, Mathematics, and Computer Science Vasily Alferov, Konstantin Makhnev and Maxim Surkov, have won the online round of the ICPC semi-final - student world programming championship. A team from the Faculty of Computer Science of HSE University in Moscow is also in the top three. In addition, three more teams from HSE Moscow and St. Petersburg made it through to the next round.
‘My Research Interests Took Shape When I Was a Master’s Student’
Zaruhi Hakobyan earned her Bachelor’s degree in Yerevan, her Master’s from HSE University, and her PhD from both HSE University and the University of Luxembourg. She spoke to the HSE News Service about the differences in academic approaches at various universities.

Charity Festival Held by HSE University
HSE University Student Development Office held its traditional Charity Xmas festival from December 1th to 5th. The event was open to HSE University students, staff and graduates, and anybody else who wished to attend. This year for the first time, it was online, but nonetheless brought together a large number of guests and speakers. The HSE News Service spoke about volunteering and charity in the Coronavirus era.
