On 8th — 11th June the International Conference on Computational Social Science, organised by the University of Aalto took place in Helsinki, attended by many of the leading lights in this new area of academic research where the meeting between sociology and computer science has the potential to design better societies.
Music and Politics
On 17th June in the Professors Hall at HSE Ilya Mochalov, second year Politics student at HSE and fourth year music student at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow, gave a solo piano concert. Ilya has won a number of Russian and international prizes at music festivals and competitions. At the concert he played works by his favourite composer, Sergei Rakhmaninov.
Culture Studies Expedition Dispels Stereotypes
The fourth HSE School of Cultural Studies Cultural Effects of Borders annual road trip passed through Rostov Oblast, Dagestan, Kalmykia and Chechnya. On the two week journey, students looked for regional cultural differences, talked to the local people and conducted their own research. On their return they talked to HSE News about the oldest city in the Russian Federation, local variations in women’s clothing and the taste of grilled ground squirrel.
International Staff Week 2015 Begins in St. Petersburg
On June 8, the Higher School of Economics in St. Petersburg began celebrating International Staff Week, a weeklong series of events designed as an opportunity for international staff members to promote their universities and develop opportunities for international cooperation.
‘Heroes among Us’ Collects Money for Graduation Party for Children in Care, and a Sportsground
On June 4, 2015, the ‘Everyday Heroes’ charity fair took place in the ZIL Cultural Center, involving students involved in charitable initiatives at HSE, MGIMO, MGU, and MIFI. The idea of creating a forum for the exchange of experience in this area was developed by two of HSE’s student projects – Open Your Eyes, and ICEF Outreach.

On May 20, 2015, Dr Michael Minch, Professor of Philosophy at Utah Valley University, gave an open lecture at HSE Nizhny Novgorod.
‘All of You Carry the Name of the University’
On June 3, HSE Rector Yaroslav Kuzminov met in Berlin with university alumni living in Germany, as well as with students and postgraduate students who are currently continuing their studies at Humboldt University. During the meeting, they discussed the development of the Higher School of Economics, differences in approaches to the educational process at universities in Russia and Germany, and the prospect for transferring certain Western practices to the realities of Russia.
‘Studying with Enthusiastic People Around is Fun’
In 2015 eight graduates from the HSE Faculty of Mathematics started PhD programmes at MIT, McGill, Caltech, Pennsylvania State University and other top universities. HSE 4th year student Dmitry Pirozhkov who has got a place at Columbia University talked to the HSE News Service about how to get onto a prestigious PhD programme and about his expectations and academic plans.
HSE Students and Alumni in Charity Run
HSE Law Faculty alumni Oksana Akhmedova and Tatiana Zolotukhina won prizes at the annual Moscow Legal Run at VDNKh. 62 HSE students worked as volunteer organisers of the run.
HSE’s Courtyard Became a Piece of Art
On May 28th, 2015, the festival of children’s and youth art, ‘We Draw the World on the Pavement’, took place in Strogino. The participants spent four hours turning the 162-sq.m. area in front of the HSE MIEM building into a canvas united by the themes of peace, joy and spring.
