HSE University and Federal University of Minas Gerais Sign Exchange Agreement
The signing of an academic exchange agreement between HSE University and the Federal University of Minas Gerais (Brazil) is another important step in the development of international partnerships and strengthening academic ties between Russia and Brazil. The agreement opens up new possibilities for students and researchers and lays a foundation for future cooperation and innovation in various scientific fields.
The academic exchange agreement was signed in September 2023 as part of a visit to HSE University by a delegation of the Federal University of Minas Gerais led by Rector Sandra Goulart Almeida. Students will be able to learn various approaches to education and gain international experience. Researchers and lecturers will have the opportunity to conduct joint research and work on publications. Both universities have significant expertise in the social sciences, humanities, natural and information sciences, including artificial intelligence. The exchange of ideas and developments between the research groups of UFMG and HSE University will expand knowledge in these fields and stimulate innovation.
During the signing ceremony, HSE University Vice Rector Victoria Panova presented HSE University as a multidisciplinary global research university with expansive campuses and advanced infrastructure. She noted the impressive achievements of HSE University students in student competitions and listed the key areas of the university’s research expertise.
The vice rector stressed the importance of such cooperation, announced an event related to BRICS+, and invited young scientists from UFMG to take part in the BRICS+ school. Victoria Panova outlined the potential for expert cooperation in Ibero-American studies.
In turn, UFMG rector Sandra Goulart Almeida noted the numerous similarities between the universities: ‘UFMG is also a multidisciplinary university. For two years in a row, it has been named the top university in Brazil in the ranking of the Brazilian Ministry of Education, and for six years it has been the leader in terms of teaching quality. It also occupies leading positions in natural and exact sciences.’ The rector particularly highlighted the fields of economics, international relations, IT, and AI.
The UFMG rector emphasised that there is interest in developing cooperation in the field of Russian studies, including Russian language, and also invited HSE University students to take part in the Brazilian Studies summer school in July 2024.
More detailed information on student exchange opportunities with UFMG is available on the International Student Support page and the academic exchange programme catalogue.
A university-wide cooperation agreement between the Federal University of Minas Gerais and HSE University was signed on February 9, 2022. In 2019, UFMG launched the Minor in International Studies for bachelor’s students. The minor was developed specifically for English- and Spanish-speaking students and its courses are taught fully in English or Spanish. The programme is not limited to international studies, and includes courses in political and social science, humanities, law, communications and more. HSE University students participating in the academic mobility programme will study this minor.
